Everything You Need To Know About Fungal Nail Infections

Onychomycosis (or fungal nail infection) is a common yet troublesome malady that affects your fingernails and toenails. Fungal infections are more common in toenails than fingernails. This is because feet are frequently subject to moist environments through socks and shoes, which creates a veritable breeding ground for fungi. While it can be a nuisance, it’s not serious and can be cleared up through various podiatric methods. To learn more about fungal infections and how to treat them, keep reading.

Signs & Symptoms Of A Fungal Infection

The sooner you spot the beginnings of a fungal nail infection, the sooner you can get treatment. Thankfully, there are not many conditions that mimic the symptoms, but it’s still important to be aware of the indicators. The main signs include:

  1.  Nail discolouration. If your nails have developed a fungal infection, one of the first (and most obvious) signs is nail staining. You can expect your nail to develop an unpleasant hue from the green, yellow, brown or black colour family. The most common is yellow, but there is no hard and fast rule. Any discolouration is an indicator that something is wrong.
  2. Nail distortion. Alongside discolouration, your nails might thicken and become brittle, scaly or cracked. The nail can appear warped or even lift from the nail bed in severe cases.
  3. Foul smell. As the infection takes hold, a foul smell will emanate from your nail. You may smell the fungal infestation before you see it.
  4. Pain. Finally, you can expect pain, swelling and discomfort from an infection. This varies from person to person, but the nail may be tender and sensitive to applied pressure.

How Can You Get A Fungal Nail Infection?

Fungus is a highly contagious organism. They reproduce through the spread of microscopic spores and favour dark, moist environments to breed. It can be spread easily through direct contact, such as sharing towels or footwear with others who harbour the infection. If you or someone in your household suffer from a fungal nail infection, it’s important not to share anything that could exacerbate the spread, including nail files and scissors. Thorough cleaning and sanitation is the best way to protect yourself and others.

As the organism prefers moisture, keeping your feet clean and dry is one way to stave off potential infections. This is especially true if your feet are prone to sweating. Avoid covering your feet where possible and invest in breathable cotton socks to prevent moisture buildup. You should also ensure your shoes are properly ventilated and allowed to dry before wearing them.

Methods Of Treatment

Unfortunately, treating fungal infections is a long and difficult process. This is because the infection can re-develop after multiple rounds of treatment, or the treatment is inefficient the first time around. Treatment includes a topical antifungal treatment that is applied to the nail periodically. The antifungal can also be taken orally under prescription.

In some cases, the nail is removed entirely if the infection is severe or not relenting after several treatments. Sometimes, it takes re-growing the nail to completely kill an infection. Fungal nail infections can be stubbornly difficult to treat, but it’s not impossible.
